The Stittsville Winter Trail Network has a vision to help people get outside and reconnect, to encourage a community of healthy, happy people enjoying winter activities outdoors
Canada is perceived as a northern nation, an arctic nation. Winter is understood to be part of our DNA. We need only look at the two international sports for which we are renowned - hockey and curling -both founded on ice. Our self image is of a people adapted to the winter climate, a hardy people. Here in the Ottawa valley we can look back to living ancestors who toiled in the woods in winter, felling trees and skidding them to the frozen lakes to be flushed downstream come spring.
However, as we have become more urbanized and created a comfortable environment where we step from our homes into a car, into an office tower and back again, many have lost our connection to winter and its joys. First thoughts are often of difficult driving conditions, slippery sidewalks and numbing cold. While these are certainly facts of winter, they should not supplant the joys of freshly fallen snow, clear blue skies and connecting with nature. Deep inside we are still those hardy people of our heritage, we only need the opportunity to reconnect with winter.
